Wellington Focused European Equity - A behavioural and fundamental approach to integrate ESG into long-term investing

The accelerating momentum towards a more sustainable, lower carbon economy is re-orientating government policy, corporate action and consumer choices. This transition causes significant disruption to many business models, both good and bad, which investors may be slow to recognise as they tend to anchor in the past and assume mean reversion. This can lead to great opportunities for an approach that uses behavioural finance to find ideas. In his presentation, portfolio manager Tom Horsey will discuss how he combines behavioural, fundamental and ESG analysis to find out-of-favour companies with brighter prospects than the valuation and sentiment would suggest.

SPEAKER

Tom Horsey

Equity Portfolio Manager
Wellington Management

Tom is a London-based equity portfolio manager and member of the firm’s Sustainability Platform. He manages the Focused European Equity Strategy and is an analyst on the Climate Adaptation Investment Team. He invests in equity assets on behalf of our clients, drawing on research from Wellington Management’s broader investment resources including our global industry analysts and ESG analysts and serves as a thought partner to other climate investors across the firm. In addition, Tom is a member of several internal ESG panels as well as the firm’s Investment Stewardship Committee which oversees all activities related to proxy voting and the integration of ESG considerations in the management of client portfolios.

GEM Equities: A Great Entry Point or Worse to Come?

From a top-down perspective, the regulatory cycle in China, Covid concerns, a stronger USD, ongoing policy tightening, geopolitical risk and inflationary pressures have all weighed on sentiment, with these macro concerns creating a dislocation in stock prices. Has the shine come off or could this be a great entry point into emerging markets. Despite the challenging backdrop, our emerging markets team has been able to identify the opportunities it has presented, focusing on what has structurally changed and now here to stay, and avoiding the cyclical and temporal. Simon Morton-Grant, Client Portfolio Manager, Global Emerging Markets and Asia-Pacific Equities, discusses his team’s views on regulation in China, key opportunities and shares his outlook for the year ahead.

Millions of people around the world rely on Columbia Threadneedle Investments to manage their money. We look after investments for individual, professional and institutional investors. Together, they entrust us with 754 billion dollar (per 31 December 2021). All our clients have financial needs and goals, and our job is to do everything we can to help achieve them. Your success is our priority.

  • Investing only in our best idea stocks
  • The importance of local, country focused investors in heterogeneous Asian equity markets

Accelerating the Transition to a Nature Positive Economy

Accelerating the transition to a nature positive economy Biodiversity loss is one of the greatest sustainability issues of our time. The natural world underpins our whole existence. Estimates suggest 55 per cent of global GDP, around $44 trillion, is dependent on high-functioning biodiversity and ecosystem services. The destruction of nature therefore threatens companies in a range of industries. The risks associated with the erosion of nature are frequently overlooked by investors, often resulting in the mispricing of companies that have a significant impact or dependencies on nature. We believe companies that establish good practices in addressing their impact on the planet should achieve stronger earnings growth and superior shareholder returns over the long term. We also see significant investment opportunity in the innovative companies providing products or services that directly protect nature or lessen the harmful impact of human activity. Join Aviva Investors’ Earth Pillar Lead and senior impact analyst Eugenie Mathieu, to discuss the implications of these trends for investors and AI’s new Natural Capital Transition strategy.

Aviva Investors is a global asset manager with over £267 bn of AUM managed in real asset, fixed income, equity, multi-asset and alternative investments in 14 countries. Our clients can benefit not only from our significant local knowledge and experience, but also from the extensive global investment resources at our disposal. Responsibility is incorporated at all levels of our organization: understanding the factors, risks and opportunities in ESG helps us to be better investors and delivering the investment results our clients expect. The value of an investment is subject to increases and decreases.  Investors may not recover the amount originally invested. *As at 31 December 2021
